Team of the Week - 19.12.25

Firsts, finals and fairytale moments take centre stage in this Team of the Week.

Hollie Davidson breaks new ground in the Six Nations, England’s stars dominate the world stage, St Mirren defy the odds at Hampden, and David Munyua puts Kenyan darts firmly on the map.

Hollie Davidson

Scottish referee making moves

Arguably one of the most successful woman referees in rugby of all time, Hollie Davidson, will become the first woman to referee a men’s Six Nations match. The Scot will take charge of Ireland v Italy on 14 February. The 33-year-old became Scottish Rugby’s first full-time female referee in 2017, has officiated two Women’s World Cup finals and the 2025 European Challenge Cup final.

England quartet

Four stars make TOTY

Hannah Hampton, Lucy Bronze, Leah Williamson and Alessia Russo were all named in 2025's The Best Women's 11, alongside seven Spanish stars, who they faced in their EURO's final clash back in July. It was another brilliant year for the Lionesses who continue to find success for both club and country as showcased by this quartet's inclusion.

St Mirren FC

Scottish giant killers

St Mirren had lifted the Scottish League Cup just once in their history and faced a daunting task against Celtic in the final. Even with Celtic struggling for form, few would have backed St Mirren as they lined up in front of 50,000 at Hampden Park. However, a Jonah Ayunga double stunned the Scottish giants and secured St Mirren’s first trophy since 2013.

David Munyua

First Kenyan to win a match at the WDC

History in the making. Not only is he the first player from Kenya to appear at the World Darts Championship, but his sensational comeback from 2-0 down made him the first from his nation to win a match at the competition. He did it in style, defeating Belgian Mike De Decker - who won one of the PDC's major televised titles, the World Grand Prix, as recently as October 2024.

Inactivity is quietly draining our economy, health system and communities. Sport England’s latest research is a wake-up call: equal access to sport and exercise could unlock £20 billion in savings and productivity gains for the UK. That’s not just a health issue, it’s an economic imperative. The data is compelling: For every £1 invested in grassroots sport, £4.38 is returned in savings and benefits. Grassroots sport contributes £36 billion annually to the economy and generates £14 billion in tax revenue. Yet inequalities persist. Those with disabilities, lower incomes, and black communities remain the least active. At New Reach, we believe the solution is clear: movement. Sport isn’t just about participation; it’s about inclusion, opportunity, and impact. Every mile run, every game played, every community initiative matters, not just for health, but for economic resilience and social cohesion. As the government prepares its Budget, the questions are: How do we make sport accessible for everyone? How do we turn participation into a national priority? Because the cost of doing nothing is too high. At New Reach, we help brands, rights holders, and organisations turn this challenge into opportunity. Through strategic PR, creative campaigns, and partnerships, we amplify the benefits of sport - driving participation, tackling inequalities, and delivering measurable impact for communities and the economy.
