Team of the Week - 30.01.26

A week of sporting moments you can’t scroll past.

Anatoliy Trubin delivered one of the moments of the season with a Champions League playoff clinching header, Kearnan Myall continues to redefine high performance ahead of Milano Cortina, GB’s X Games trio lit up Colorado with three golds, and Robert Paxton claimed another world indoor bowls title in a final for the ages.

Anatoliy Trubin

Benfica goalkeeper

It’s one of those moments that makes everyone go ‘wow’. A beautiful header from Benfica’s goalkeeper Anatoliy Trubin - not only a rare and remarkable moment with a keeper scoring, but the goal that clinched a playoff spot in the Champions League for José Mourinho’s side. The Ukrainian goalkeeper has dedicated his goal to his nation, writing after the game: "For Ukraine. For those who know how to fight till the end."

GB Trio

X Games Gold Medallists

Kirsty Muir, Zoe Atkin and Mia Brookes all delivered top performances to secure gold for Great Britain at the X Games in Colorado last weekend. Muir also picked up a silver, but won gold in the freeski slopestyle while Atkin won the women's freeski superpipe competition. Brookes saw success in the snowboard slopestyle having become the world's youngest World Snowboarding Champion aged 16 in 2023. The trio will all head to Italy for the 2026 Winter Olympics in February eyeing more gold...

Robert Paxton

World Indoor Bowls Champion

As you may well know, indoor bowls has had a firm grip over New Reach for the past few weeks, with the BBC covering the whole 2026 World Indoor Bowls Championships. The final was contested between two titans of the sport, five-time men’s singles world champion Paul Foster and world number three Robert Paxton. A tightly contested final saw Paxton win a tie breaker set to claim his second men’s singles world title and take home £50,000. Bowls, you are my new favourite sport.

Kearnan Myall

GB Snowsport’s performance director

Referred to as one of the smartest thinkers in sport, former pro rugby player Kearnan Myall is innovating GB Snowsport to the Winter Olympics. The former Leeds, Sale and Wasps player had never skied until recently, but since his appointment is calling upon formula 1 technology and brain science to prepare the team for Milano Cortina. I highly recommend having a read of Robert Kitson’s interview with Kearnan in The Guardian.
