Team of the Week - 01.05.26

History, milestones and remarkable endurance define this week’s Team of the Week.

Sebastian Sawe rewrote marathon history with a sub two hour run in London, Akil Howson will become the first black official at an FA Cup final, George North prepares to close out a legendary international career, and Hannah Cox completed an extraordinary 100 marathons in 100 days.

Sabastian Sawe

Marathon world record breaker

There was absolutely no way that Sebastian Sawe wasn’t making the New Reach team of the week. In case you didn’t know - and if you didn’t, where have you been?! - the Kenyan superstar made history in epic style at the London Marathon, becoming the first athlete to run a sub-two-hour marathon in a competitive race. Sawe won the marathon in an astonishing time of one hour 59 minutes 30 seconds, more than one minute faster than the late Kelvin Kiptum's previous record of 2:00:35, set in 2023.

George North

Welsh rugby great

George North will call it a day on his career at the end of the current season. The Welsh winger has won 121 caps for his country, won four Six Nation titles and toured twice with the British and Irish Lions. Many will remember his unbelievable try against Australia in 2013 for the Lions as well as picking Isreal Folau and taking him for a ride, an unbelievable career and player.

Hannah Cox

100 marathons in 100 days

London Marathon would’ve taken the headlines in the past few weeks but for Hannah Cox, that barely scratches the surface. Following her father’s death in 2011, Cox researched into her Indian heritage and became fascinated, in 2024 she decided it was time to take on the challenge. After just 18 months of training, Hannah Cox set off and ran 100 marathons in 100 days around India. What an effort.

Akil Howson

Record-making official

Akil Howson will become the first black official at an FA Cup final, following his selection as an assistant referee at Wembley when Chelsea take on Manchester City. In 2023, Howson became the Premier League's first permanent black official in 15 years, following Uriah Rennie.
