History makers, long awaited returns and exciting new chapters headline this week’s Team of the Week.
Billy Loughnane became Britain’s youngest champion jockey in over a century, Atlanta Dream celebrated their first ever WNBA Finals victory, James Maddison marked his return to Tottenham after 536 days with a stunning goal, and Sarina Wiegman committed her future to the Lionesses with a contract extension until after Euro 2029.
Billy Loughnane
Champion Jockey
Loughnane made history this week, becoming the youngest rider in over a century to be crowned Britain's champion jockey following his victory at Ascot. Aged just 20, Billy beat five-time champion Oisin Murphy to the title, becoming its youngest holder since Charlie Elliott in 1923. An impressive achievement and certainly someone to keep an eye on!
Atlanta Dream
First ever finals win
The Dream delivered the franchise's first-ever WNBA Finals victory to level their series against the Golden State Valkyries at 1-1. Angel Reese starred, dropping 30 points and grabbing 16 rebounds a few weeks after being named the league's Defensive Player of the Year. The franchise held a dire record in the finals, going 0 for 10, until this result that sets up two crucial games back in Atlanta.
James Maddison
Tottenham’s ‘new’ signing
James Maddison returned to Tottenham’s team for his first competitive game in 536 days, helping secure their first win of the Premier League season against Coventry. The former Coventry player scored an absolute worldie on his return, and hopefully, he can be the spark that the team I support needs to kick on.
Sarina Wiegman
Lionesses’ manager
Sarina Wiegman extended her tenure as England manager this week, keeping her in charge until after Euro 2029. The Dutchwoman has already guided England to two European titles, as well as a World Cup runners-up finish. Hopefully, the extended contract can bring more silverware and, more importantly, that long-awaited World Cup trophy.
