Team of the Week - 03.04.26

History, healing and high speed momentum headline the week.

Gary Woodland’s emotional return to the winner’s circle after seven years, Jannik Sinner’s relentless march through the Sunshine Double, Jermain Defoe stepping into his first managerial role, and Kimi Antonelli becoming Formula 1’s youngest ever championship leader made this another standout week across sport.

Gary Woodland

US golfer

An emotional Gary Woodland won the hearts and minds of everyone at the Houston Open, sealing his first victory in seven years. The US golfer was overcome with emotion upon clinching the title, his first win following an operation to remove a brain tumour in September 2023. Woodland revealed recently that he has also been struggling with PTSD.

Jannik Sinner

Men's World No. 2

Sinner has become the first man since Federer to win the 'Sunshine Double' and he did so without dropping a set. That makes it 34 sets won in a row for the Italian at ATP Masters 1000 level. His triumph also matched a record held by the remaining members of the big three, Djokovic and Nadal, as the only men to win three consecutive tournaments at that level. The gap is closing to his rival Alcaraz with matchups between the two guaranteed throughout 2026.

Jermain Defoe

Tottenham legend

This may be a slightly biased pick from me, with Defoe being one of my favourite players of all time, however, securing your first managerial role is no small feat. After a 23 year career, in which he scored 305 goals, Defoe has just been appointed Woking manager with the team sitting in 10th place in the National League. If he can get the Woking strikers scoring like he was in his prime, they'll be flying up the leagues in no time.

Kimi Antonelli

F1 driver

As the new season gets underway, Kimi Antonelli became the youngest title leader in Formula 1, following his second win in succession. After a somewhat controversial race, in the Japanese Grand Prix, as a result of a safety-car period, the 19-year-old becomes the youngest driver in history to head the championship and leads his team-mate by nine points.
