Where performance meets purpose, this week in sport. 🏅

Great Britain’s athletes

GB’s most successful World Athletics Indoor Championships

Three golds in 28 minutes is pretty special, topped off with Josh Kerr’s triumph the day before and you’ve got yourself Great Britain’s most successful World Athletics Indoor Championships haul. Last Sunday’s medal rush was kicked off by Georgia Hunter Bell winning the 1500m title, before Molly Caudery secured pole vault gold, rounded off with world dominant Keely Hodgkinson winining the 800m final. Josh Kerr won 3,000m gold the day before, with Britain securing a record four world indoor golds.

Edin Dzeko

Bosnia-Herzegovina forward

The former City striker rolled back the years at 40-years-old, scoring a late equaliser against Wales in their World Cup playoffs semi-final. After securing a win on penalties, the Bosnians will face Italy in the final and a win could see Dzeko join an exclusive list of players to play at a World Cup over the age of 40. Six goalkeepers and only one outfield player have achieved this to date, with Modric and Ronaldo set to do so this summer, too.

Alex Cooper

The heartbeat of AFC Bournemouth

Premier League side AFC Bournemouth recently shared a video in support of World Down Syndrome Day, highlighting star employee Alex Cooper. Alex joined the club through the WorkFit scheme, a brilliant initiative that connects people with Down syndrome with employers. In the video, it is clear how much the players, managers and staff value Alex, not only because of his personality but also because of how good he is at his job. The proof is in the words of those around him. Former player Tommy Elphick described Alex as “the star of the show”, while manager Andoni Iraola called him the “VIP”.

Katja Snoeijs

Everton Women footballer

In a fine example of athletes using their voice for good, Everton’s Katja Snoeijs opened up to The Guardian’s Tom Garry about her endometriosis diagnosis. The Netherlands striker has explained the symptoms and signs for people to look out for, and discussed the impact the condition had on her playing career.
