Team of the Week - 19.06.26

Emotional stories and historic achievements take centre stage in this week’s Team of the Week.

Vozinha’s World Cup story continued to capture hearts beyond the pitch, Serena and Venus Williams prepare for one final Wimbledon appearance together, the New York Knicks ended their long wait for NBA glory, and Sonny Baker announced himself on the international stage with a dream England debut.

Vozinha

Cape Verde goalkeeper

I was going to pick Messi after he scored a hat-trick aged 38 and became the joint highest scorer in World Cup history. But, the story that everyone is following is the journey of Cape Verde goalkeeper Vozinha’s mum. The 40-year-old keeper already caught attention after his incredible performance during the draw against Spain, but his story off the pitch is capturing hearts and minds. His mum had been unable to attend the World Cup because of the high cost of obtaining a US visa, however she’s now on her way. Just lovely.

Serena and Venus Williams

American tennis superstars

The Williams sisters are back, well…nearly. Serena and Venus will be retiring to Wimbledon together this year after being handed a wildcard to compete together in the doubles. Serena who made her comeback to court recently at Queen’s last week, boasts 23 Grand Slam singles titles, while Venus is a five-time Wimbledon singles champion

New York Knicks

NBA Champions

The Knicks ended their wait for a championship in style against Wemby's Spurs, taking the full attention of New York as the World Cup rolled into town in the process. So many great stories within this from Brunson's FMVP performances to OG's incredible game-winner, it's no surprise it was the most watched NBA Finals in 28 years. Not to mention they secured their first ever double after winning the newly established NBA Cup.

Sonny Baker

England’s new fast bowler

Sonny Baker marked his England Men’s test debut against New Zealand with two wickets in the first innings. Baker, just 23, has got off to an impressive start for Hampshire in Country cricket and was rewarded with a start for England after what has been a testing time for the national side both on and off the pitch. A well deserved cap and if you want to see what it meant to him, go and watch his celebration after his first wicket.
