Team of the Week - 03.07.26

From cricket whites to Centre Court, this week had a bit of everything.

Christian Fuchs swapped Premier League medals for cricket whites and made an immediate impact, Arthur Fery kept British hopes alive at Wimbledon, Chris Froome brought the curtain down on one of cycling's greatest careers, and Alexandra Eala continued her remarkable rise while inspiring a new generation of tennis fans in the Philippines.

Christian Fuchs

Former Premier League winner turned cricketer

It’s not every day that a Premier League winner starts playing cricket, and absolutely smashing it. Enter Christian Fuchs, the former Leicester City champion who turned out for Grindleford in a Sunday friendly in Derbyshire. A debut to remember, the 40-year-old claimed two wickets, contributed to a run-out and scored 12 runs, including a four and a six.

Alexandra Eala

Filipino tennis player

Eala is into the third round at Wimbledon, the furthest someone from the Philippines has gone in a grand slam, and is single-handedly raising the profile of tennis in her home country. Thousands have been following her across the world to see her play and are in London making themselves heard this week. Next up she is taking on world number one Iga Swiatek.

Chris Froome

Four-time Tour de France winner

Legendary cyclist Chris Froome has called it a day on his incredible career that saw him win the Tour de France four times and record seven Grand Tours along the way. Awarded an OBE in 2015 for his services to cycling, Froome unfortunately suffered a serious car crash in 2025 that has ultimately led to his retirement. The cyclist said “that was not the way I wanted it to end. But even then, I knew it was over.” Don’t be sad it’s over, be glad it happened, Chris. What a career.

Arthur Fery

British tennis player

Arthur Fery is back and he’s keeping Britain’s slim hopes alive at Wimbledon. In a disastrous start to Wimbledon for British players, Fery came back from a set down to overcome Finland’s Otto Virtanen to reach the third round. Watched on by the Princess of Wales, Fery produced a rare moment of joy in SW19.
