Team of the Week - 05.09.25

From Argentina to Czechia to Hampshire, this Team of the Week is international. With the potential end of the biggest international star, a new star is born in Manny Lumsden. The WSL have introduced minimum salary requirements and Sam reminisces on his idol.

Manny Lumsden

Hampshire cricketer

It’s been some season for the teenager, as the 16-year-old gets his first England selection. The young seamer has taken 7 wickets in List A cricket, including best figures of 3-64, and has impressed with his ability to perform under pressure in senior competition. Following a standout debut season, he’s been named in England Men’s Under-19s squad for the upcoming Youth ODI series against Ireland and Bangladesh.

Kelvin Soquessa

Czechia boxer

The young star got his World Boxing Championships campaign off to a strong start with a win on the opening day. He was one of the first interviews I did at the first World Boxing Cup in Sheffield and is as good on camera as he is in the ring. At the time, his interview was our most-engaged post, two years on, here's hoping he can become a world champion.

Lionel Messi

The greatest of all time

Lionel Messi, in potentially his last international game for Argentina, topped his trophy laiden tenure with the national team with 2 goals agaonst Venezuala. I hope it isn't time for the little magician to bow out of international football but if it is then what a way to sign off.

WSL Football

Progress for women’s football

The Guardian has revealed, in an exclusive from Tom Garry, that minimum salaries are being introduced in the Women’s Super League and WSL2 this season. After consultation with the players’ union, the move is designed to will stop second-tier players needing part-time jobs on the side.

Inactivity is quietly draining our economy, health system and communities. Sport England’s latest research is a wake-up call: equal access to sport and exercise could unlock £20 billion in savings and productivity gains for the UK. That’s not just a health issue, it’s an economic imperative. The data is compelling: For every £1 invested in grassroots sport, £4.38 is returned in savings and benefits. Grassroots sport contributes £36 billion annually to the economy and generates £14 billion in tax revenue. Yet inequalities persist. Those with disabilities, lower incomes, and black communities remain the least active. At New Reach, we believe the solution is clear: movement. Sport isn’t just about participation; it’s about inclusion, opportunity, and impact. Every mile run, every game played, every community initiative matters, not just for health, but for economic resilience and social cohesion. As the government prepares its Budget, the questions are: How do we make sport accessible for everyone? How do we turn participation into a national priority? Because the cost of doing nothing is too high. At New Reach, we help brands, rights holders, and organisations turn this challenge into opportunity. Through strategic PR, creative campaigns, and partnerships, we amplify the benefits of sport - driving participation, tackling inequalities, and delivering measurable impact for communities and the economy.
