Team of the Week - 20.02.26

From Olympic gold to stoppage time chaos, another week in sport that has not disappointed.

Mikaela Shiffrin stormed to Olympic slalom gold with a dominant 1.50 second margin, John Murray continues to set the benchmark in sports commentary, Wolves clawed back from 2-0 down to snatch a stoppage time draw against Arsenal and Keely Hodgkinson smashed the indoor 800m world record in 1:54.87.

Mikaela Shiffrin

Women’s slalom Olympic champion

It’s been a rocky period for the American skier, overcoming grief, crashes and a lack of confidence, but what a moment for Mikaela Shiffrin in the Italian Alps. After eight long years without an Olympic medal, she produced two incredible runs to secure the women’s slalom title, with a commanding 1.50 sec margin, the third largest in Olympic history. Watching it live, in the midst of recovery from my recent operation, the build-up was immense, the expectation out of this world - and she well and truly delivered.

John Murray

Sports Commentator

Slightly different one this week... 5 Live's John Murray has been at the BBC for more than three decades now and, given my brief cameo as a commentator for Lewes FC, I wanted to give him his flowers. Despite not being a big radio listener, I always seem to be travelling during Sunday 4pm kick offs and get to enjoy his dulcet tones. An icon of the genre who unsurprisingly selected the 2022 World Cup Final as the best game he's commentated on in a recent article about his career.

Wolverhampton Wanderers

Comeback kings

Bottom of the league and 2-0 down against league leaders Arsenal would normally be a done deal.. not for Wolves. Rob Edwards and his team managed to claw their way back into the game with a wonder goal from Hugo Bueno before a 90 +4 minute goal from Tom Edozie levelled the two teams. Arsenal seem to be terrified of extending their lead at the top of the table which is making for an extremely exciting end to the season.

Keely Hodgkinson

800m indoor world record holder

Take a bow Keely Hodgkinson, one of only two British athletes to hold a current world record in one of athletics’ championship events. This week, the 23-year-old broke the nearly 24-year women's indoor 800m world record, set by Slovenia's Jolanda Ceplak on the day that Keely was born. The Olympic champion crossed the line in one minute 54.87 seconds, taking almost one second off Ceplak's record, which had been held since 3 March 2002.
