Team of the Week - 06.03.26

Touchline moments dominate this Team of the Week. ️

Mahamed Mahamed balances London Marathon training with Ramadan observance, Rob Edwards continues Wolves’ remarkable resurgence, Dave Rennie becomes the first head coach of Pasifika heritage to lead the All Blacks, and Neil Warnock takes charge of his 1,627th match, proving the fire still burns.

Mahamed Mahamed

British long distance runner training around Ramadan

It’s great to see how sport has developed its approach to Ramadan, with stoppages in play to allow players to break their fast. And it’s not new for athletes to adjust their training routines while observing Ramadan, but for British runner Mahamed Mahamed, it’s taken a lot. Marathon training is hard enough, let alone while fasting - especially when chasing down Mo Farah’s national marathon record. Training for the London Marathon, Mahamed Mahamed is currently finishing his sessions as late at 1am, attempting to balance the demands of altitude training with observing Ramadan.

Rob Edwards

Wolves manager

Is this the start of a great escape? Rob Edwards has led Wolves on a seemingly impossible run of form, defeating Liverpool in their latest success. My go to career mode team have gone from 'will they catch Derby's point total?' to taking seven points from Arsenal, Villa and the reigning champions. Also, shoutout to Gomes, Gomes, Gomes and Gomes for their impact in this run.

Neil Warnock

England’s most experienced manager

Two managers in two weeks for me, but this one couldn’t be ignored. Neil Warnock took charge of his 1,627th game as he stepped in to manage Torquay against Farnborough, with the match ending 2-2. A cult hero for his touchline and changing room antics, Warnock admitted, “I had the heart pumping, nervous before the game, things like that, and you forget really.” It shows that even after almost 50 years in management, ‘dying for three points’ is still his priority.

Dave Rennie

First New Zealand coach of Pasifika heritage

The All Blacks have a new head coach, as they strive to restore their position as one of the toughest sides to face in world rugby. Not only is the appointment of Dave Rennie significant for the international rugby landscape, but a major moment culturally, with Rennie becoming the first person of Pasifika heritage to lead the side. Rennie, aptly, addressed the media for the first time in Maori, saying "Kia orana koutou", translating as "hello to all" or "hello everyone".
