Team of the Week - 12.09.25

From Argentina to Czechia to Hampshire, this Team of the Week is international. With the potential end of the biggest international star, a new star is born in Manny Lumsden. The WSL have introduced minimum salary requirements and Sam reminisces on his idol.

Ellis & Sam

World Boxing’s news service legends

My team of the week goes to two of New Reach’s finest – Sam and Ellis. The guys are camped out in Liverpool for a couple of weeks, providing the news service for World Boxing at the inaugural World Boxing Championships. They are doing an amazing job, the days are long and it’s very busy, so I wanted to take a moment to thank them.

Erling Haaland

Norway's goal machine

The striker continues to score at will, this time putting five past Moldova and getting two assists, scary stuff. Not what any opposition player wants to see, particularly if you're United's new goalkeeper signing, with a Manchester derby at the weekend. The result takes Norway to five wins from five in qualifying and saw Thelo Asgaard grab a hat trick. A good day the office all round.

Carlos Alcaraz

US Open winner

Carlos Alcaraz has become the second youngest player to get to 6 grand slams after his US Open win over rival Jannik Sinner. The Spaniard, just 22, has also regained top spot in the world rankings from Sinner who had previously held the position for 65 weeks. The future of tennis is safe.

Exiles using football

Women refugees on their fight for recognition

It bucks the trend from a traditional team of the week, but an article from Suzy Wrack in The Guardian really struck a chord, and I felt it needed mentioning. Wrack spoke to a handful of exiles from the Taliban in England and Australia on how they are using football to battle prejudice and give a voice to women and girls in Afghanistan. Well worth a read, very inspiring and powerful.

Inactivity is quietly draining our economy, health system and communities. Sport England’s latest research is a wake-up call: equal access to sport and exercise could unlock £20 billion in savings and productivity gains for the UK. That’s not just a health issue, it’s an economic imperative. The data is compelling: For every £1 invested in grassroots sport, £4.38 is returned in savings and benefits. Grassroots sport contributes £36 billion annually to the economy and generates £14 billion in tax revenue. Yet inequalities persist. Those with disabilities, lower incomes, and black communities remain the least active. At New Reach, we believe the solution is clear: movement. Sport isn’t just about participation; it’s about inclusion, opportunity, and impact. Every mile run, every game played, every community initiative matters, not just for health, but for economic resilience and social cohesion. As the government prepares its Budget, the questions are: How do we make sport accessible for everyone? How do we turn participation into a national priority? Because the cost of doing nothing is too high. At New Reach, we help brands, rights holders, and organisations turn this challenge into opportunity. Through strategic PR, creative campaigns, and partnerships, we amplify the benefits of sport - driving participation, tackling inequalities, and delivering measurable impact for communities and the economy.
