Team of the Week - 19.09.25

Record breakers, history makers and trailblazers headline this week’s Team of the Week.

Faith Kipyegon cemented her dominance with a fourth world 1500m title, Hull KR lifted the League Leaders’ Shield for the very first time, and twins Mary and Millie Taylor continue to inspire on and off the cricket pitch. Elsewhere, Pafos FC are living the Champions League dream after defying the odds in their debut campaign.

Hull KR

League Leaders’ Shield winners

One thing you may not know about me is that I love rugby league. And when I worked at the Warrington Wolves all those years ago, if someone said to me that Hull KR would ever be lifting the League Leaders’ Shield, I would have scoffed. But fair play, here we are, and The Robins have lifted it for the very first time.

Pafos FC

Cypriot football team

Pafos are the feel-good story of Champions League GW1, qualifying for the competition despite the club only forming eleven years ago. They beat three sides in qualifiers and are set to face Bayern and Chelsea in the league phase. To kick off, though, they travelled to Olympiakos and secured a 0-0 draw in spite of a red card in the 26th minute adding to their already monumental task.

Faith Kipyegon

Record breaking runner

Faith Kipyegon added another chapter to her legacy by storming to a fourth world 1500m title in Tokyo in 3:52.15. Her dominance in the event now equals Hicham El Guerrouj’s four world titles in the event and she remains unbeaten in the global finals over this distance.

Mary and Millie Taylor

Cricket trailblazing twins

We had the pleasure of working with journalist Raf Nicholson to set up a chat with Hampshire player Mary Taylor for BBC Sport. In the feature, Raf chatted to Mary and her twin, Millie, on how the pair are taking separate paths on the pitch, but making incredible waves. Mary is set to feature for Hampshire in this weekend’s One Day Cup final at Utilita Bowl.

Inactivity is quietly draining our economy, health system and communities. Sport England’s latest research is a wake-up call: equal access to sport and exercise could unlock £20 billion in savings and productivity gains for the UK. That’s not just a health issue, it’s an economic imperative. The data is compelling: For every £1 invested in grassroots sport, £4.38 is returned in savings and benefits. Grassroots sport contributes £36 billion annually to the economy and generates £14 billion in tax revenue. Yet inequalities persist. Those with disabilities, lower incomes, and black communities remain the least active. At New Reach, we believe the solution is clear: movement. Sport isn’t just about participation; it’s about inclusion, opportunity, and impact. Every mile run, every game played, every community initiative matters, not just for health, but for economic resilience and social cohesion. As the government prepares its Budget, the questions are: How do we make sport accessible for everyone? How do we turn participation into a national priority? Because the cost of doing nothing is too high. At New Reach, we help brands, rights holders, and organisations turn this challenge into opportunity. Through strategic PR, creative campaigns, and partnerships, we amplify the benefits of sport - driving participation, tackling inequalities, and delivering measurable impact for communities and the economy.
